HL Deb 14 November 1972 vol 336 c700WA
LORD CAWLEY

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether they will consider amending the Copyright Act 1956 to remove the anomaly that it is an infringement tocopy a mechanical part, only if it is itself copied from a drawing, a fact which is usually only known to the manufacturerof the part.

THE PARLIAMENTARY UNDERSECRETARY OR STATE, DEPARTMENT OF TRADE AND INDUSTRY (THE EARLOF LIMERICK)

It may be found desirable, in the not too distant future, to appoint a Committee to considerthe law of copyright generally, and this point will fall for consideration. In the meanwhile, industry and practitioners arebeing consulted on the desirability of excluding from the protection of the Copyright Act features of shape dictatedsolely by the function the article in question has to perform.
