HC Deb 06 November 1972 vol 845 cc51-2W
Mr. Arthur Lewis

asked the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry why it took him until 23rd October, 1972, to send a substantive reply to the hon. Member for West Ham, North's letter of 8th August concerning the Whitefriars Investment Trust; and what information contained in this letter of 23rd October was not available and known to him on 8th August.

Sir G. Howe

The delay was due to the need to verify the facts about the company. An interim reply was sent on 4th September.

Mr. Arthur Lewis

asked the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry when he was first asked to take action regarding Whitefriars Investment Trust Limited; what action he took; why, since a Receiver was appointed in 1964, matters connected with this company have still not been resolved; when he expects the position to be cleared up; and whether he will make a statement.

Sir G. Howe

Some complaints were received in 1967 and 1968 alleging failure by the directors to produce accounts and other information. Complainants were informed that defaults were not normally pursued after a Receiver had been appointed. The second part of the Question is a matter for the Receiver.
