Mr. Winterton

asked the Secretary of State for Employment how many factories and mills have notified him of their closure in Macclesfield, Congleton and Bollington in the last eight years; how many have notified him that they expect to close in the next six months; and how many jobs, male and female, respectively, are involved.

Not all closures are notified to my Department. However, our records show that 24 closures of establishments in manufacturing industry employing 575 males and 593 females were notified to my Department's Macclesfield and Congleton local offices in the period 1st May, 1964 to 30th April, 1972. Twelve of these establishments. employing 401 males and 312 females, were engaged in the manufacture of textiles.

My Department has not been notified of any establishments in these areas which are expected to close within the next six months.

NOTE: The Bollington Urban District area is included in the area covered by the Department's Macclesfield local office.
