HC Deb 24 May 1972 vol 837 c409W
Mr. Maginnis

asked the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland if he will give details of the incidents which occurred in Portadown, County Rrmagh, on Wednesday, 10th May, after the return of the supporters of Portadown Football Club.

Mr. Channon

On Wednesday, 10th May, 1972, a small number of football supporters returning from a match in Belfast were stoned when leaving Portadown railway station by a crowd of about 200 which later increased to about 300. Local police separated the two factions and extra police were drafted in from Armagh. A party of police in Curran Street was heavily stoned and 10 policemen were injured, one sustaining a broken leg. While removing their injured colleagues, the police were again heavily stoned and shots were fired in their direction from a high building in Curran Street. The crowds were eventually dispersed with the help of the Army. Two arrests were made.
