§ Mr. Deakinsasked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what research her Department is undertaking 422W into the health hazards of smoking cannabis.
§ Mrs. ThatcherThe Medical Research Council, for which I am responsible, is supporting studies centred on social and clinical factors in drug abuse, including cannabis, at one of its own research establishments. Similar work is being carried out with long-term grant support provided jointly by the council and the Department of Health and Social Security at another centre and a further long-term grant covering investigation of the pharmacological and toxicological actions of cannabis has recently been awarded. Shorter-term grants have also been made to cover a number of studies on this particular drug.
