§ Mr. Leslie Huckfieldasked the Secretary of State for Social Services (1) what research is being undertaken by his Department into the causes of babies dying in their cots;
(2) how many babies died in their cots in 1970 and 1971.
§ Mr. AlisonFigures of sudden and unexpected deaths in infancy are not centrally available as the practice of doctors varies in completing death certificates. The Office of Population Censuses and Surveys is looking into the problem of identifying such deaths. The subject is being studied by the Foundation for the Study of Infant Deaths with whom my Department is in touch.
