HC Deb 16 May 1972 vol 837 c89W
Mr. Gwynoro Jones

asked the Secretary of State for Wales what is the average weekly total earnings in each county in Wales, with figures for males and females.

Mr. Peter Thomas

There are no reliable figures for males and females separately. The figures of total earnings —which includes pensions as well as wages and salaries—for adults as a whole for 1969–70 are as follows:

Employment income (Schedule E)
£ per week
Anglesey 21.72
Breconshire 19.23
Caernarvonshire 19.03
Cardiganshire 18.39
Carmarthenshire 20.80
Denbighshire 20.66
Flintshire 22.06
Glamorgan 21.61
Merioneth 19.47
Monmouthshire 22.58
Montgomeryshire 18.70
Pembrokeshire 20.41
Radnorshire 16.02

The figures above are derived from the, as yet unpublished, Survey of Personal Incomes for 1969–70 carried out by the Inland Revenue. That survey was the first one where taxpayers were classified regionally by the place of residence and consequently the figures are not strictly comparable with those of earlier surveys. There have of course been substantial increases in earnings since the collection of the information.
