HC Deb 16 May 1972 vol 837 cc56-7W
53. Mr. Latham

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer if he will list the steps taken to eliminate discrimination on grounds of sex from those fields of law and administration which are within the control of his Department; and in which matters such steps have not yet been taken.

Mr. Higgins

As far as the Inland Revenue is concerned, provision has been made that where a married couple jointly so claim, the wife's earnings—although not her investment income—shall be charged to tax as if she were a single person.

In the fields which fall within the responsibility of the Chancellor of the Exchequer's other departments, I am not aware of any steps which need to be taken to eliminate discrimination on grounds of sex.
