HC Deb 09 May 1972 vol 836 cc335-6W
Mr. James Hill

asked the Secretary of State for Employment what steps he takes to assist seafarers employed by passenger lines and threatened with redundancy to find new jobs before they become unemployed.

Mr. Dudley Smith

Every effort is made by the establishment offices of the Merchant Navy Establishment Administration to assist those seafarers who wish to continue at sea to obtain further seagoing employment. My Department takes all possible steps to help those who require employment ashore including where appropriate interviewing and registration in advance of their discharge, and the forwarding of details of their employment requirements to their home areas.
