HC Deb 09 May 1972 vol 836 cc309-10W
61. Mr. Arthur Lewis

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what is the average time taken to make the necessary arrangements for the granting of retirement pensions where applications are made in accordance with the proper instructions and the applicant has no National Health Insurance contributions problems; why in some instances it takes up to three months; why Mrs. Springer, details of whom are in his possession, who reached 60 years of age on 12th February, 1972 and made her application on 20th February, 1972 is still awaiting her pension; and when this is likely to be paid.

Mr. Dean

The average time taken to deal with a straightforward claim for retirement pension is three weeks, but longer may be required where further enquiries are needed. The necessary enquiries in Mrs. Springer's case are not yet complete but in accordance with normal procedure an interim award has been made and put into payment. I have written to the lion. Member.
