HC Deb 09 May 1972 vol 836 c315W
Mr. Ewing

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services how many dental surgeons have withdrawn from the National Health Service since March. 1971.

Sir K. Joseph

The latest available figures show that in the 12 months to 30th September, 1971, there was a net increase of 119 dentists in contract with executive councils in England and Wales for the provision of general dental services. During that period 725 general dental practitioners, including those retiring because of age and those who died, ceased practising in the general dental services.

Mr. Ewing

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what was the total amount paid to dentists from the National Health Service between 31st March, 1970, and 31st March, 1971, and the amount paid betwen 31st March, 1971, and 31st March, 1972.

Sir K. Joseph

The gross fees paid to dentists in Great Britain during the financial year ended 31st March, 1971, for the provision of general dental services amounted to £103 million, including £18.6 million from patients' contributions; the equivalent figures for the year ended 31st March, 1972, were £114.4 million and £24.9 million.
