HC Deb 09 May 1972 vol 836 c332W
Mr. Ralph Howell

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what is his latest estimate of the tax revenue to be derived from the taxation of unemployment benefit, sickness benefit and supplementary allowance at present exempted from taxation; and what adjustment to the standard rate of income tax would be required to offset the extension of taxation to these benefits.

Mr. Nott

About £150 million for unemployment benefit and sickness benefit —including invalidity benefit—equivalent to about 1p of the standard rate. I cannot make an estimate for supplementary benefits but the yield is unlikely to be large.
