§ Mr. Neaveasked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what general guidance she has given to county councils, including Berkshire, about the number of teachers they should employ.
§ Mrs. Thatcher:For some years the Department has notified every local education authority each winter of the number of full-time "quota" teachers which represented their share of the total number expected to be available in the next school year. In addition authorities have been encouraged to recruit as "off-quota" teachers part-timers and married women returners. At the end of January, 1972, Berkshire was over 2 per cent. above its quota. In addition it employs more than average numbers of "off-quota" teachers.
