HC Deb 02 May 1972 vol 836 cc74-5W
51. Miss Lestor

asked the Secretary of State for Employment how many people under the age of 16 years are currently registered as unemployed.

Mr. Dudley Smith:

The provisional figure of young people under 18 years registered as unemployed on 10th April, 1972, was 60,282. I regret that statistics do not distinguish separately those under 16 years of age.

Mr. Dalyell

asked the Secretary of State for Employment if he will make a statement on the latest conveniently available youth unemployment figures in Scotland.

Mr. Chichester-Clark:

11,121 young people were registered as unemployed in Scotland in April, 1972, 777 less than in March. There has also been some increase in vacancies. The situation should improve as the Government's economic measures, including those announced in the Budget, take effect.
