HL Deb 29 March 1972 vol 329 c1161WA
LORD AVEBURY

asked Her Majesty's Government:

What are the maximum part-time earnings which a student may receive without loss of grant; what decrease in grant is imposed if earnings exceed this level by 10p; and under what regulation these limits are determined.

THE PARLIAMENTARY UNDERSECRETARY OF STATE, DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION AND SCIENCE (LORD BELSTEAD)

There is no limit to the amount which students on teacher-training courses, or first degree and comparable courses, and holders of Government bursaries on postgraduate courses may earn during vacations without adjustment of grant. The maximum amount of net income from term-time earnings and other sources which may be received without loss of grant is £100. Postgraduate studentship awards are not reduced unless the student's income from earnings and other sources exceeds £175, of which not more than £100 may be from sources other than teaching and demonstrating. Any excess over the prescribed allowances is deducted from the grant.

The relevant statutory regulations are: The Awards (First Degree etc. Courses) Regulations, 1971; the Students' Allowances (Scotland) Regulations, 1971; the State Award Regulations, 1963 as amended.
