HC Deb 08 March 1972 vol 832 c336W
116. Mr. Heffer

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment what plans he has to seek to change the law regarding individual water supplies to residential houses; whether he will make such supplies compulsory; and to what extent he is prepared to grant financial aid.

Mr. Graham Page

Powers are already available to deal with the situation where a common service pipe to a number of houses has become insufficient for the supply needs of the occupiers. In that situation the owner of each house—whether landlord or owner-occupier—can be required by the water undertaker to provide it with a separate service pipe

As to financial help, Section 96 of the Housing Act, 1964, enables local authorities to grant-aid the provision of such a service pipe. Or, such work can be grant-aided if the separate service pipe is provided when improving a house with the benefit of improvement grant under the 1969 and 1971 Housing Acts.
