HC Deb 02 March 1972 vol 832 cc185-6W
Mr. Marks

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what further representations he has made to the Turkish authorities concerning 14-year-old Timothy Davey, a British subject; and if he will seek to obtain his transfer to the United Kingdom in view of his age.

Sir Alec Douglas-Home

As the House will know Timothy Davey was on 1st March sentenced to 6 years 3 months imprisonment and a fine of about £4,200. I understand that his lawyer has lodged an appeal against the sentence. The case is thereforesub judice.

This is a most distressing case and everyone will deplore the plight of a child caught up in this sordid business.

We have been and shall continue to be in close though informal touch with the Turkish authorities here and in Ankara. They are well aware of the views of Her Majesty's Government and the strength of public feeling in Britain about this case.

United Kingdom law does not provide for a sentence imposed by a foreign court to be served in this country.
