HC Deb 27 June 1972 vol 839 cc311-2W
Mr. Laurance Reed

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what rights Great Britain asserts in relation to the natural resources of the archipelago of Spitsbergen.

Mr. Anthony Royle

Under Article 3 of the Treaty Regulating the Status of Spitsbergen of 1920, which recognised Norwegian sovereignty over Spitsbergen, United Kingdom nationals have equal rights with nationals of the other High Contracting Parties to carry on maritime, industrial, mining and commercial operations in Spitsbergen.

They enjoy these rights subject to the observance of local law and regulations which apply equally to nationals of all the High Contracting Parties.
