§ Mr. Arthur Lewisasked the Secretary of State for Employment whether he is aware that from May, 1969, until May, 1972, the total number of unemployed in the London Borough of Newham has increased from 2,770 to 3,803; what was the reason for this; and what action he has taken or proposes to take to reduce the level of unemployment in this London borough.
§ Mr. Dudley SmithI am aware of the rise in unemployment in the borough, due mainly to the lower level of economic activity nationally. I am sure the hon. Member will be pleased as I am that the number of unemployed males in the borough fell by 500 between April and May this year. This reduction shows that the extensive measures we have introduced are beginning to reduce unemployment.
