§ 69. Mr. Simon Mahonasked the Secretary of State for the Environment for what purposes the Liverpool and Leeds Canal is used on the stretches between Aintree and Bootle and Liverpool; how much has been spent on this stretch of canal since vesting day by local authorities and by the British Waterways Board; and if he will make a statement.
§ Mr. PeytonThis length of the canal is used for recreational and water supply purposes and meets land drainage needs. My Department has no information about expenditure by local authorities in connection with it but in the three years to 1971 the British Waterways Board spent about £24,000 on maintaining and operating it. The future of the length is a matter for the board.
