LORD MERRIVALE

asked Her Majesty's Government:

In the context of a defensive military alliance constituted by the North Atlantic Treaty of April, 1949:

  1. (a) whether they would agree that Gibraltar holds a key position of strategic importance, and
  2. (b) whether they would define, within SACEUR, the importance of Gibraltar as a part of the Mediterranean Command.

THE SECRETARY OF STATE FOR DEFENCE (LORD CARRINGTON)

Her Majesty's Government agree that Gibraltar holds a key position of strategic importance, and SACEUR shares this view.

House adjourned at sixteen minutes past ten o'clock.
