§ Mr. Dormandasked the Secretary of State for Education and Science (1) what proposals she has for increasing the supply of teachers over the next 10 years; and if she will make a statement;
(2) what is the estimated present shortage of teachers in primary and secondary schools, respectively; and for which subjects there is a shortage in secondary schools.
§ Mr. van StraubenzeeThe supply of teachers later in the decade will depend upon the outcome of my right hon. Friend's current review of educational developments generally and is meanwhile increasing by some 17,000–20,000 a year. Within this improved supply there are relative shortages of teachers of the youngest children in primary schools and of teachers of mathematics, physics, English, French and handicraft in the secondary schools.
