Grant is paid by the Home Office to police authorities at the rate of 50 per cent. on local police expenditure—except in the City of London, where the rate is 33⅓ per cent. In the case of the Metropolitan Police there is an additional payment from central funds for expenditure on protection and other duties. Most of the central Government expenditure is on common police services, towards the cost of which police authorities contribute 50 per cent.
