Mr. Sydney Chapmanasked the Secretary of State for the Environment how many qualified persons of the following professions are employed in his Department on the design of motorways and trunk roads, namely, civil engineers, architects, town planners, and landscape architects; and what is his estimate of the proportion of their time spent on design, and on public inquiries.
§ Mr. Peter WalkerMy Department's Highways Directorate employs 456 civil engineers, two architect town planners, and three landscape architects. The Department also bears the full costs of the 1,633 qualified engineering staff employed in the road construction units organisation on motorway and trunk road design. A large number of other professional officers in the Department are also associated with this work as occasion requires. I regret that it is not possible to give a meaningful breakdown of the time spent by the Department's officers on design and on public inquiries.
