Mr. Loveridge

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what steps he is taking to advise local authorities on the allocation and building of premises suitable for physically handicapped married couples.

Mr. Alison

Guidance issued by my Department in 1965 on the provision and design of residential homes for the physically handicapped contains advice on the provision of double rooms for married couples. My officers keep this in mind when considering local authorities' plans for new homes and we do not consider any further guidance on the principle is needed at the present time.

Advice in relation to the provision of housing is a matter for my right hon. Friend the Secretary of State for the Environment.
