HC Deb 06 July 1972 vol 840 c196W
Mr. Bishop

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science why she will not seek powers to make it a requirement that only qualified teachers shall be allowed to teach in independent schools; and to make such teachers subject to the same requirements as teachers in State schools.

Mrs. Thatcher

I do not need such powers. Independent schools are required by Part III of the Education Act, 1944, to provide efficient and suitable instruction: this calls for teachers with suitable qualifications and/or experience, though not necessarily with the formal status of "qualified teacher".
