HC Deb 06 July 1972 vol 840 cc191-2W
44. Mr. McMaster

asked the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland how many people have been murdered and maimed by Republican terrorists since August, 1969; and how many of those responsible have been arrested and charged with these murders and criminal assaults, and how many convicted, to the latest convenient date.

Mr. David Howell

It is not possible to state categorically how many people have been murdered by the IRA, but since August, 1969, 389 people have died as a result of terrorist activity. Monthly records of injuries were not kept prior to 1st July, 1970, but between October, 1968, and 25th June, 1972, 6,988 people were injured.

Forty-eight persons have been charged with murder or attempted murder and 20 of these have so far been convicted. As regards arrests and convictions for "criminal assault" this term covers a wide range of offences and it is not possible to give a specific reply to this part of the Question.
