HC Deb 06 July 1972 vol 840 cc212-3W

Mr. Arthur Lewis asked the Secretary of State for Employment whether he will make a statement on his Department's report showing that it now costs £31 per week to keep an average family.

Mr. Chichester-Clark

The Family Expenditure Survey shows that the average weekly expenditure of private households was nearly £31 in 1971 which was an increase of 8.5 per cent. over the previous year. However, the survey also shows that in the same period average weekly household income increased by 8.7 per cent.
