HC Deb 04 July 1972 vol 840 cc119-20W
Mr. Sillars

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland what has been the percentage increase in the price paid for oil by the South of Scotland Electricity Board when January, 1970 prices are compared with those at January, 1972.

Mr. Gordon Campbell

The Board informs me that the average price per ton it paid for oil in January, 1972, was 23 per cent. higher than in January, 1970, but the quantities and qualities of oil purchased at these dates were not the same.

Mr. Sillars

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland if he will state the average price per ton of coal and oil, respectively, paid by the South of Scotland Electricity Board in each of the past five years.

Mr. Gordon Campbell

The information is given in the following table. During these years the quantities and qualities of both coal and oil supplied to the Board have altered, and the calorific value of one ton of oil is on average about twice that of one ton of coal.

Year Coal Average price per Ton Oil Average price per Ton
£ £
1967–68 4.888 9.783
1968–69 4.963 10.754
1969–70 4.938 9.650
1970–71 5.294 9.340
1971–72 6.203 11.695
