asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer, in view of the fact that the European Economic Community possess the power to lay down guidelines for national budgets before they have been approved, if he will make a statement on his study of this matter and on the steps he is taking designed to protect British interests.

Mr. Arthur Lewis

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer (1) whether he will give an estimate of the costs to the Exchequer of reimbursing to any Member of Parliament, businessman, student, journalist, company director or taxpayer engaged in work connected with the furtherance of British exports, within a maximum of £60, two-thirds of the cost of the course of study which he or she has completed in a European Economic Community language since 1st April, 1972;

(2) whether he will give an estimate of the costs to the Exchequer of allowing to any Member of Parliament, businessman, student, journalist, company director or taxpayer engaged in work connected with the furtherance of British exports, within a maximum of £60, two-thirds of the cost of a course of study which he or she may have completed in a European Economic Community language since April, 1972, to be a claimable allowance against income tax.
