asked the Secretary of State for the Environment what steps he is taking to promote greater amenity use of inland waterways, including canals.

The Government are organising a national conference to be held in the near future with the following terms of referenceTo examine in the context of the Government's proposals for the future organisation of water services ways and means of developing the rivers, lakes, canals and reservoirs for:

  1. (i) The greater benefit of sport and recreation;
  2. (ii) The enhancement of urban and rural amenities;
  3. (iii) The promotion where appropriate, of inland waterborne commerce.
