HC Deb 25 January 1972 vol 829 c411W
53. Mr. Willey

asked the Minister for the Civil Service what was the number on non-industrial civil servants employed in Great Britain and in each of the development areas, respectively, in 1961 and 1971.

Mr. David Howell

At 1st July, 1971, there were some 483,500 non-industrial civil servants employed in Great Britain. The approximate numbers employed in the development areas (including special development areas) were:

Scottish Development Area 30,000
Northern Development Area 31,000
Merseyside Development Area 11,000
Welsh Development Area 11,000
For the South-West region as a whole the figure was 41,000. Information about the location of staff relates to the numbers in specific towns and to the numbers in the rest of the region concerned (e.g., the South-West as a whole). Separate information for civil servants in the designated development area in the South-West is not held centrally and would be costly to collect.

There were some 370,000 non-industrial civil servants employed in Great Britain at 1st July, 1961, but information about the numbers then employed in what are now development areas is not available.
