Mr. Sillars

asked the Minister of State for Defence how many civilians are now employed in the United Kingdom naval dockyards; how many are employed in the Scottish dockyards; and how this figure compares with the last five years.

Mr. Kirk

The number of civilians employed in the United Kingdom naval dockyards (Chatham, Plymouth, Portsmouth and Rosyth) on 1st January, 1972, was 43,186 of whom 7,625 were employed at Rosyth.

The comparable figures for Rosyth during the last five years are as follows:
