§ Mr. van StraubenzeeThe Department does not normally collect information about maintenance allowances, but a special ad hoc return from local education authorities was called for in respect of the Spring Term 1970. This showed that the parents of about 20,000 children were receiving maintenance allowances. When the leaving age is raised to 16, maintenance allowances will continue to be payable for pupils over that age.
