asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many persons were charged with murder in courts in England and Wales in 1971; how many were found guilty; and what were the comparable figures in each of the previous 14 years.

Following is a table, based on table 7 in "Murder 1957–68", with figures for later years taken from the published Criminal Statistics, giving the information for 1957 to 1970, on the basis of persons committed for trial on a charge of murder.
