§ Mr. Geoffrey Lloydasked the Secretary of State for the Environment whether consideration has been given to the pollutional effects arising from the 311W disposal of used car oil in drains by many motorists who change their own car oil; and what steps towards controlling this practice are being contemplated.
§ Mr. Eldon GriffithsThere is little doubt that some water pollution is caused by the disposal of used car oil, though it is not possible to say to what extent the individual motorist is responsible. Anyone who puts oil into a drain communicating with the public sewer could be committing an offence under the Public Health Act, 1936. My Department is consulting the Association of Public Health Inspectors on the advice to be given to motorists as to how to dispose of used oil acceptably.
