asked the Secretary of State for Employment what proportion of those unemployed at present have been unemployed for more than a year; and what were the corresponding proportions in each of the last 10 years.

The numbers registered as wholly unemployed are analysed in sufficient detail to identify those who have been on the register for more than 52 weeks at quarterly intervals. From 1962, the analysis has been made in January, April, July and October. Until then, it was made in March, June, September and December. The figures for January, 1972, are not yet available.
