HC Deb 18 December 1972 vol 848 cc258-9W
53. Mr. George Cunningham

asked the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry what are the names and professions of all persons appointed as members of the North Thames Gas Board, the dates of appointment and salaries paid.

Mr. Tom Boardman

Following is the information:

make a statement on his discussions with the Civil Aviation Authority and others on the problem of air crew fatigue.

Mr. Michael Heseltine

The Chairman of the Civil Aviation Authority has confirmed to me that the committee which the authority set up last month to review the provisions governing the avoidance of excessive fatigue in aircrew has already started work and will report as soon as possible having regard to the importance and complexity of this matter.

Mr. Michael McNair-Wilson

asked the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry whether, from the point of view of safety, he is satisfied with the hours worked by pilots in the British Overseas Airways Corporation and British European Airways; and if he will hold discussions with the Chairman of the Civil Aviation Authority designed to ensure that adequate rest periods are provided between flights so that pilots are alert and able to perform all their flying duties at any time.

Mr. Onslow

This is a matter for the Civil Aviation Authority. As my hon. Friend will be aware, the authority has set up a committee under the chairmanship of Group Captain Douglas Bader to consider whether any amendment is required to the existing provisions on flight time limitations.

Mr. Michael McNair-Wilson

asked the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry if, in the interests of safety, he will impose a minimum age limit of 25 years for those flying crew of the British Overseas Airways Corporation or British European Airways who may be asked to fly as second or third pilot.

Mr. Onslow

No. The Civil Aviation Authority, whose responsibility it is to consider such matters, has made no proposal to amend the Air Navigation Order to this effect.

Mr. Michael McNair-Wilson

asked the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry if, in the interests of safety, he will have discussions with the Chairman of the Civil Aviation Authority about revising and up-dating the medical examinations undergone by pilots in the British Overseas Airways Corporation and British European Airways.

Mr. Onslow

I have already asked the chairman of the authority to consider as
