HC Deb 18 December 1972 vol 848 c255W
49. Mr. Jay

asked the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry whether the Government will support the proposals presented by the American Government to the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade for the abolition of industrial tariffs over a ten-year period by members of the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade.

Mr. Peter Walker

The United States have made no proposal in these terms. Their representative did say at the recent GATT session that the time might soon be at hand when programmes for the phased elimination of tariffs could seriously be contemplated. We are willing to consider this among other possibilities with our EEC partners.
