§ Mr. Mikardoasked the Secretary of State for Education and Science how many day-release students have enrolled for the current year at polytechnics, technical colleges, and colleges of further education, respectively, in scientific and engineering courses and in business management studies courses; and what were the corresponding figures for 1971.
§ Mr. St. John-StevasFigures are not available in the form requested. Information about day-release students, as distinct from all part-time day students, is collected annually on the basis of the industry of employer only and does not include details of the types of course undertaken. At November 1971 a total of 587,500 released students were enrolled at grant-aided further education establishments in England and Wales, including 45,700 at the 30 designated and proposed polytechnics; corresponding figures for 1972 are not yet available. Day-release students represented 82 per cent. of all part-time day students in 1971. The total number of part-time day students taking courses leading to qualifications in scientific, engineering and technological subjects was 409,100–28,700 at polytechnics—and in management studies, 14,000 —4,200 at polytechnics.
