§ Mr. Meacherasked the Secretary of State for Social Services at which offices throughout the country the four-week rule limiting supplementary benefit for the unemployed is now being applied; and at what date it was reapplied in each of these areas.
§ Mr. DeanThe following is the information at 24th October 1972:
on supplementary benefit, and the total number in each category, respectively, not dependent on supplementary benefit, but earning less than £8 a week and earning £8 a week or more.
205W
§ Mr. DeanThe numbers in the respective categories receiving supplementary benefit in November 1971 were as follows:
single mothers 62,000 separated mothers 103,000 divorced mothers 42,000 widowed mothers 26,000 Excluding widows with national insurance widows' benefits, it is estimated that the total number of single, separated, divorced or widowed mothers not receiving supplementary benefit at that time was about 190,000. Of these some 60,000 virtually none of whom were in full-time work, are estimated from the Family Expenditure Survey to have been earning less than £8 a week and 130,000 are estimated to have been earning £8 a week or more. We have no reliable breakdown of these figures within the particular categories mentioned.
