HL Deb 09 August 1972 vol 334 c1265WA
THE EARL or HARROWBY

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether research into the means of keeping public electricity equipment immune from lightning during thunder storms (which causes such widespread difficulties) could be expedited, and how soon it is envisaged that some solution in the general way may be achieved.

LORD DRUMALBYN

The Electricity Council are investigating several methods of diminishing the adverse effects of lightning strike. Field trials are well advanced in various parts of the country to test these new techniques and there is little more that can be done until sufficient practical experience has been accumulated. Although a complete solution to this problem is never likely to be economically possible, the Electricity Council are hoping to make substantial progress in the next few years.
