HC Deb 08 August 1972 vol 842 cc343-4W
Mr. Hardy

asked the Secretary of State for Employment what is the number of jobs which have been lost in the coal-mining, iron and steel and textile Indus- tries in the Yorkshire and Humberside region between 1960 and 1970 and in the last two years.

Mr. Dudley Smith

Precise information about job gains and job losses is not available, but an indication of net changes can be obtained by comparing the levels of employment at different dates. The Yorkshire and Humberside region was formed in April, 1965, and the earliest employment estimates for that region are for June, 1965.

Between June, 1965, and June, 1970, the estimated numbers of employees in employment fell in the coal mining industry by about 30,000, in the iron and steel industry by about 11,000 and in the textiles industry by about 30,000.

The latest figures available are for June, 1971; hence estimates are not available for the last two years. However, between June, 1970, and June, 1971, the estimated numbers of employees in employment in the coal mining industry in the region fell by about 2,000, in the iron and steel industry by about 7,000 and in the textiles industry by about 19,000.
