HC Deb 03 August 1972 vol 842 c166W
32. Mr. Thomas Cox

asked the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland what projects involving participation by local communities are now under consideration by his Department.

Mr. David Howell

Such projects are a normal part of the work of most Northern Ireland Departments. Local community participation is a special feature of the programme administered by the Ministry of Community Relations under the Social Need (Grants) Act (Northern Ireland), 1970.

Some of the measures which I announced on 27th July should also help to stimulate local activity: in particular the creation of a direct labour organisation to carry out a wide range of local schemes; accelerated public expenditure on community centres and indoor sports centres; and the expansion of the industrial training programme to provide pockets of suitably trained workers in areas of high unemployment.
