HC Deb 01 August 1972 vol 842 cc74-5W
Mr. Barnes

asked the Secretary of State for Employment whether men who, as a result of long-term unemployment, are no longer required to register for work are included in those statistics showing those who are unemployed.

Mr. Dudley Smith

The unemployment statistics show the numbers of persons on the registers of employment exchanges and youth employment service careers offices who are unemployed, capable of, and available for work on the day of each monthly count. Those registrants with long-term unemployment who are required to attend at an exchange at only quarterly intervals to prove continuing availability for work are included in the statistics, but severely disabled persons who can expect to secure further employment only in sheltered conditions are excluded. There were some 13,000 people in this latter category in April, 1972.
