HC Deb 13 April 1972 vol 834 cc214-5W
Mr. Arthur Lewis

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department (1) if he will make a statement on the communication from the hon. Member for West Ham, North, dated 26th March, regarding matters connected with the rights of immigrants; and on the nature of his reply;

  1. (2) whether he can give an assurance that, under the existing arrangements on Great Britain's entry into the European Economic Community, a British Commonwealth, Channel Isles and Isle of Man citizen will be entitled to travel and to work in any country of the enlarged Ten in the same manner as a French West Indian from Martinique will be enabled to settle in Great Britain;
  2. (3) whether he will make a statement on the recent announcement made by the authorities of the Common Market on the position of British citizens in general and British Commonwealth citizens in particular regarding the free flow of citizens within the countries of the enlarged Ten after Great Britain's entry into the Common Market.

Mr. Lane

I cannot usefully add to the comprehensive reply I sent to the hon. Member on 10th April.

Mr. Arthur Lewis

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department whether he has received the communication from the hon. Member for West Ham, North, dated 27th March, regarding illegality upon the part of the police and the need for action by him; and what action he proposes to take in connection with it.

Mr. Carlisle

I have received the hon. Member's letter. The matter to which it relates has been referred for investigation as the Statute requires.
