Dame Joan Vickersasked the Secretary of State for Education and Science, in view of the importance of knowledge of foreign languages in order to improve understanding between peoples, what action she is taking to improve the teaching of foreign languages in the primary, secondary, comprehensive and aided schools.
§ Mr. van StraubenzeeResponsibility for teaching in schools lies with local education authorities and the individual schools. The Department does, however, provide advice and training to teachers, mainly through H.M.I., and sponsors research into teaching methods.
