HC Deb 11 April 1972 vol 834 c139W
36. Dr. Summerskill

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services whether he is satisfied with the amount spent upon research into the cause and treatment of schizophrenia; and if he will make a statement.

Sir K. Joseph

It is not possible to identify separately the amount being spent on research into schizophrenia. Expenditure on research into mental disorder, embracing schizophrenia, both by my Department and the Medical Research Council, has substantially increased in recent years and in 1971–72 amounted to some £2.4 million. My right hon. Friend the Secretary of State for Education and Science and I regard this as a satisfactory trend which we expect to continue.
