HC Deb 11 April 1972 vol 834 cc175-6W
Mr. Clark Hutchison

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland what policy he proposes to adopt on Newcastle disease in Scotland, in the light of the Report of the Fowl Pest Review Panel on the epidemic in England and Wales in 1970–71.

Mr. Gordon Campbell

After full consultation with Scottish poultry and game Interests, and taking into account Scotland's record of relative freedom from the disease, my right hon. Friend the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food and I have decided to retain statutory provisions for restrictions on infected premises and infected areas in Scotland; to continue the existing control on the movement of live poultry, day-old chicks and hatching eggs, including game birds and their eggs, into Scotland from any other part of Britain; to continue the existing prohibition of auction sales of store poultry except under licence by a local authority; and to cease to slaughter birds in the case of the per-acute form of the disease. The necessary orders will be made as soon as possible.
