Mr. Edwin Wainwright

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services if he is aware that, owing to a shortage of consultant surgeons and lack of facilities in the Sheffield Regional Hospital Board's area, there are long waiting lists of patients suffering from various medical complaints, who require surgical treatment; and what action he intends to take to reduce these waiting lists.

Mr. Alison

The Sheffield Regional Hospital Board is undertaking a major programme of capital building developments throughout the region to redress the long-standing shortage of hospital facilities. As this programme matures, improved facilities and staffing levels will reduce the times at present waited by non-urgent cases for admission to hospital.
